Meta Tags

Meta Tags are a part of HTML. The abbreviation HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language is the primary language on the internet. Meta Tags, a part of the onpage optimization are placed in the head section of a web page and their data is set in place for search engines purpose.

Some Meta Tags are Important to Search Engines

The Most Important of all Meta Tags

The Meta Title Tag is the first word and the most important words search engine reads when they index a web page. The title tags are the (Keywords) you see at the top left of your browser, in most browsers. Now those keywords are set in place by the website designer or better yet by a SEO Expert, which you might have to hire. The latter all depends on how serious you are about ranking.

Optimizing Title Tags

This is how search engine distinguish a title tag
<title>Title Tags Optimization</title>

Often I see title tag space being wasted on a word like “Welcome” or a company name. If your company is unknown to the public then its a waist of valuable space. On the other hand, if you are well known then it’s a different story, but keeps “Welcome” out of there.

  • You should always have your most important keyword phrase first to insure that it will not be cut off at the end of the line.

  • As part of web search optimization the title tags should be relevant to what is on your webpage.

  • These keywords should be research.

  • There is no sense having keywords in the title tag that is not search by potential clients or viewers.

  • Title Tag keywords are usually two, three and even four word phrases such as Meta Title Tag or Optimizing Title Tags.

  • Often you don't even see a separator between one keyword phrase and the other and that's Ok.

  • To gain more weight from search engines you should only use two sets of keyword sentence and even one set if you want to target that specific keyword phrase.

  • Very often, you will see a lot more keywords used in the title bar and that takes away for the more poweful keywords.

The whole idea of having less keyword in the title bar is to get more weight on specific keywords, from search engines. I always keep my title tags below 82 characters, unless I am experimenting. On different notes some says between 60 and 115 is ok while some say no more than 50. The fact is that Google will display 58 to 63 characters only therefore that should be the max.

In addition, also as part of Optimizing Title Tags you have to insert the Meta Title Tag keywords in your text.

The Description Tag

The description tag is the second most important tag that will get search engines attention. When you land on a Google search page results the first line of the organic search engine results is the title followed be the description.

  • The Title better known in the Business as the Title Tag is the Blue Text
  • In Black is the Description Tag
  • In Green is the URL

In this case the keyword phrase use to find my website was Website Design Toronto. Take a close look at the bold keywords in the title and in the description.

Description Tag Information

This description tag when it comes to Google search engine should be limited to around 150, 160 characters with space. In this case, above, any characters after 152 were not display but a search engine is still able to read text to about 160 characters.

I say about 160 because there is a difference of opinions on the World Wide Web. Around 160 characters seem to work fine for my websites and every website I built in the past. Yahoo and MSN search engines also have different limits on characters.

As you seen above the (Bold Text) in the title tag and description tag is what attracted the Organic Search Engine to the page, well aside from having quality and relevant on page text.

Over the years these Meta Tags have been abused and abused to trick search engines.
